Summer 2012 Events

Get Going is an exciting new program of activities and information for young people and learner drivers with disabilities, including those looking to return to driving after becoming disabled.

Our most recent event was Get Going – Live! at Donington Park on August 13th 2011. Over 300 people came along to our free all-day driving experience which included a fleet of adapted vehicles available to test drive for those aged 14+ as well as skid cars, rally cars and 4x4s.

It’s been good to ask questions

It was Kate’s first time behind the wheel, she test-drove the Ford Focus. She also found the range of information and advice available at the event really useful, saying: “Before I had no idea where to get all the information from. Sometimes you don’t know where to start so it’s been really good to ask questions.” Kate found the event a real confidence-boost and has decided to get on with organising some driving lessons.

I’m going to get my lessons sorted

Joe, 18, test-drove several cars. His favourite was the Vauxhall Astra – he found it the easiest to transfer into and it was also the fastest! Joe said: “I already had my provisional licence but now I’m going to get lessons sorted, it’s been really good to see the cars available.”

I’d like to see more events like this

Heather, 14, travelled all the way from Wales with her parents to Get Going – Live! after hearing about it at the Mobility Roadshow. She said: “It was really good to be able to see all the different cars and be able to check out things like the boot space properly. I’d like to see more events like this for people my age.” Heather’s mum also agreed that the information and range of vehicles had been really useful. “When you just go to dealerships, you can’t try out an adapted car and often they aren’t really that interested in talking to you about loading a chair – they aren’t the questions they want you to ask.”

This has been a really good event

Jamie, 16, test-drove four vehicles over the course of the day. As well as a chance to drive he was also interested in boot space: “Hopefully I’ll be choosing a car soon and it has to have room for my racing chair as well. This has been a really good event, especially the driving and the motorsport.”
